A Mother’s Story of Trauma, Love and Healing

They say it is the call all parents live in fear of getting. They say if you do get the call,
you will somehow know what has happened even before anything is said.  They are
right. On February 4, 2017, Bianca received that “call” in the form of the sound of a
doorbell with a police officer at the door.  Bianca’s 17-year old son was in a serious car
accident and was being taken to emergency surgery.  Upon arriving at the hospital,
Bianca learned that her son had an extremely serious brain injury, broken bones from
head to toe, organ damage and loss of vital functions.  The next day, Bianca and her
family were told that “it would be unlikely that Matthew would ever wake up” from his
coma.  What came next was years of recovery, rehabilitation and resilience.
This presentation will detail the extraordinary and motivating story of Bianca’s family
story from near-death to miraculous recovery.  This inspiring presentation will also
cover:

Understanding traumatic brain injuries and the impact on the family system

  • PTSD as a result of a traumatic event in a family
  • The critical role support from family, friends, colleagues and even strangers
    played in this recovery journey
  • The importance of self-care, self-compassion and forgiveness
  • How to face an uncertain future with confidence
  • How to find hope and resilience in an unbearable situation
